I dropped off my nomination papers this morning at the Waunakee Village Hall. What that means is that unless an excessive number of the signatures on those papers are deemed invalid (unlikely, since most had signed in previous years, and were deemed valid in those years), all of the paperwork that needs to be filed by January 5, 2021 for my candidacy has been completed.
Next steps depend highly on the number of candidates running. As of today, based on the information on the Village of Waunakee web site, as well as my own knowledge, the following four people are intending to run for the three seats on the village board (in order of paperwork being filed):
- Joe Zitzelsberger - Previous Trustee from 2018-2020. Lost re-election in 2020, coming in 4th out of 5 candidates. Joe has lived in Waunakee since 2005.
- Phil Willems - Incumbent, having held the seat for well over a decade. Phil has a long history of doing great things for Waunakee, and has lived here since 1975
- Robert McPherson - Previous candidate, coming in 6/6 in 2019, and 5/5 in 2020. Robert works in banking compliance and has lived in Waunakee since 2013
- Gary Herzberg - Incumbent, having regained a seat in 2019 after being ousted in 2018 by Joe Zitzelsberger and Erin Moran. Gary played a huge role in getting the current Waunakee Public Library funded and built (Thank you, Gary!). Gary has lived in the village since 1996 The Village of Waunakee web site doesn't list any paperwork having been submitted so far, but there's no reason at this point to believe that Gary won't run.
