Trustee Zitzelsberger Declares Noncandidacy for Waunakee Village Board
WAUNAKEE, Wis. – Village of Waunakee Trustee Joe Zitzelsberger has formally announced that he will not seek re-election to the Village Board in the upcoming 2026 Spring Election. His current term will conclude in April 2026.
Zitzelsberger has served the Waunakee community as a Village Trustee for 6 of the last 8 years. During his tenure, he has served as Chair of the Finance Committee and the Police Committee, and as a member of the Plan Commission, Utilities Commission, Sustainability Committee, and Village Center Advisory Committee.
Trustee Zitzelsberger has been a logical and cautious voice as the village navigates its continued growth. He has been an advocate for strong public safety, responsible fiscal management, strategic infrastructure planning, and the enhancement of community parks and recreational spaces. He was instrumental in the creation of Waunakee’s annual shred event, and continues to work with village staff to expand the network of walking paths throughout the village, particularly across challenging geography. His contributions have played a vital role in projects aimed at preserving Waunakee’s unique quality of life while preparing it for the future.
"It has been an absolute honor to serve the residents of Waunakee and work alongside dedicated staff and fellow board members," said Zitzelsberger. "While I won’t rule out a run for public office in the future, other life challenges at this time warrant stepping back at the end of my term. As I have since my first election, I encourage other passionate residents to consider running for the Board and lending their voices to our village’s future."
Information for Potential Candidates Trustee Zitzelsberger’s decision to file a Notification of Noncandidacy (EL-163) clarifies the field for prospective candidates. Residents interested in running for the Village Board in the April 7, 2026 Spring Election must file their Declaration of Candidacy and Nomination Papers with the Village Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
